A Shift in Germany’s Defense Policy

Germany is reassessing its nuclear stance as concerns grow over a potential shift in US security policy under Donald Trump’s presidency. According to Digi24, the new German coalition government is preparing to significantly increase military spending and explore alternative security arrangements.

Friedrich Merz, the likely future German chancellor, has indicated a willingness to seek a more independent European nuclear deterrent, calling for closer cooperation with France and the UK. This marks a departure from past German policy, which has relied on the US nuclear umbrella under NATO’s nuclear-sharing arrangement.

Growing Public and Political Support for Nuclear Cooperation

For decades, most Germans opposed hosting US nuclear weapons. However, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has dramatically shifted public opinion. A 2022 survey showed that 52% of Germans now support maintaining or even expanding the country’s nuclear capabilities, a stark contrast to the 14% approval recorded in 2021.

Germany currently hosts around 20 US nuclear bombs at Büchel Air Base and has committed to purchasing F-35 fighter jets capable of carrying them. But with the possibility of the US reducing its defense commitments, Berlin is considering closer nuclear coordination with Paris and London. French President Emmanuel Macron has responded positively, signaling openness to a European nuclear deterrent strategy.

European Nuclear Autonomy: A New Reality?

The prospect of a European nuclear-sharing agreement is gaining traction, but challenges remain. Critics question whether France and the UK, with their relatively small nuclear arsenals, could provide a credible deterrent compared to the US. There are also concerns about political instability in both countries, which could affect long-term commitments.

Despite these challenges, Germany appears determined to explore new defense strategies. With growing uncertainty over US-Europe relations, Berlin is taking steps toward a security policy that no longer depends solely on Washington’s protection.
