The Swedish Royal Family holds an important place in the nation’s history and culture, blending tradition with modern responsibilities.

The Royal Palace in Stockholm, a historic site and administrative center, is a symbol of the monarchy’s enduring presence.

Ensuring its security are the Royal Guards, who protect the palace while representing its heritage to visitors from around the world.

Impaled in the head

On Saturday morning, a member of the Royal Guard suffered a severe injury during his duties at the Stockholm Royal Palace.

The incident occurred around 10 a.m., prompting police and emergency services to respond to what was described as a workplace accident.

The soldier slipped and fell, causing his bayonet to impale his head.

The bayonet, a blade affixed to the end of the ceremonial rifles carried by the guards, became lodged in the soldier’s skull, creating a life-threatening situation.

Björn Lindul, spokesperson for the Swedish Armed Forces, described the event as an unfortunate accident.

"He slipped and had terrible luck with the way he fell," Lindul explained.

The soldier’s colleagues quickly stepped in to provide assistance before medical professionals arrived.

Their actions were instrumental in stabilizing the injured guard, who was then transported to the hospital for surgery.

Lindul commended their swift and effective response, noting the vital role they played in the situation.

Following the surgery, the guard’s condition is reported to be stable.

Meanwhile, the police have opened an investigation into the accident to determine whether workplace safety regulations were followed and if any contributing factors need to be addressed.
