Historic German Train Factory to Begin Producing Tanks

In recent years, Germany has increased efforts to strengthen its defense industry amid rising global tensions.

A strategic shift is now underway, with some traditional manufacturing plants reorienting toward defense production to support national and allied security goals.

A renowned train manufacturing plant in Görlitz, eastern Germany, will transition to producing parts for military vehicles, including the Leopard 2 main battle tank, starting in 2027, as reported by Digi24.

The change comes under an agreement between the Franco-German defense group KNDS and French rail manufacturer Alstom.

Scholz Welcomes Job Security for Görlitz

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz described the agreement as "very good news," emphasizing the importance of preserving industrial jobs in Görlitz despite Alstom's departure.

"Instead of train carriages, defense parts will be manufactured here starting next year," Scholz said during a visit to the factory on Wednesday.

The plant, with a history of over 175 years, will continue producing double-decker train cars through next year to fulfill remaining orders for customers in Germany and Israel.

Starting in 2027, it will supply components for the Leopard 2 tank, Puma infantry fighting vehicle, and Boxer armored personnel carrier, all key platforms in Germany's defense strategy.

The agreement highlights Germany's ongoing commitment to modernize and expand its defense sector.

The Leopard 2, widely regarded as one of the most advanced battle tanks, has played a crucial role in NATO operations.

The addition of the Görlitz facility to the supply chain reinforces Germany's capacity to meet growing defense demands amid heightened geopolitical pressures in Europe and beyond.
