Dreaming of a tropical getaway to Bali?
You might want to start budgeting extra—because the island paradise is considering a tourist tax that could hit your wallet hard.
While many popular destinations like Mallorca, Venice, and Barcelona charge visitors a relatively small fee, Bali’s proposed tax is on a whole different level.
According to Euronews, Wayan Puspa Negara, a key figure in Bali’s tourism industry and a legislator in the Badung region, has floated the idea of charging tourists up to $100 per day.
That means a one-week stay could set visitors back nearly $700 just in taxes. For comparison, Barcelona’s tourist tax ranges between $4 and $7 per day.
Travel expert Jens Erik Rasmussen, who has spent three decades updating the guidebook The Journey to Bali & Lombok, doubts this hefty tax will ever see the light of day.
“A $100-a-day fee would turn Bali into a luxury destination, pricing out many travelers. If tourism drops, a lot of people could lose their jobs,” he told Jyllands-Posten.
This isn’t the first time such an idea has been floated. Bali’s governor, Wayan Koster, reportedly discussed a similar tax in 2023.
For now, Bali only requires a one-time entry fee of $10, but if this new daily charge becomes reality, a vacation in paradise might come with a much heftier price tag.
