India is eager to boost its economic relationship with the United States as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office, according to Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal.
"We look forward to deep and meaningful engagement with the new US administration," Goyal said in comments shared by Interfex.
He pointed to the strong progress in US-India relations during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s work with previous US leaders, including Presidents Barack Obama, Donald Trump (during his first term from 2017 to 2021), and Joe Biden.
Trade between India and the US reached $118 billion in the 2023–24 fiscal year, with India holding a $32 billion trade surplus.
Indian business leaders are optimistic that trade could grow by another $50 billion in the next two to three years.
While there is hope for stronger ties, challenges remain.
Trump has previously criticized India’s trade practices, calling it the "tariff queen" because of its high duties on American goods. Last December, he even pledged to impose retaliatory tariffs on Indian exports if needed to protect US interests.
