The radical Islamist group Islamic State – Khorasan Province (ISPK) has issued threats against major events worldwide, including Munich's Oktoberfest.
As reported by TAG24, local authorities are closely monitoring the situation, though no concrete threat to the festival has been identified.
Authorities Take Threats Seriously
Munich police confirmed awareness of the recent threats, emphasizing that all intelligence is being thoroughly assessed.
“The current threat message is known to us,” a police spokesperson stated, noting that it aligns with the persistent high-risk level posed by Islamist terrorism. However, they reassured the public that no specific danger to Oktoberfest has been identified at this time.
The 2024 Oktoberfest already operated under heightened security measures, following a series of violent incidents across Germany.
Security was further intensified with the introduction of hand-held metal detectors at festival entrances, aiming to prevent potential threats.
Increased Surveillance of ISPK
Security agencies are maintaining a close watch on ISPK, which has been linked to multiple terror-related activities globally. Authorities in various countries have identified suspected affiliates, including a man who reportedly attempted to gain accreditation as a security staff member for the upcoming UEFA European Championship.
In March 2024, ISPK was allegedly responsible for a devastating attack on Moscow's Crocus City Hall concert venue, which resulted in the deaths of more than 140 people.
Security Challenges at Major Events
Despite robust security measures, law enforcement acknowledges that absolute protection against lone-wolf attackers cannot be guaranteed. With millions of visitors expected at Oktoberfest, vigilance remains a top priority.
Authorities urge the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities as part of ongoing efforts to ensure safety at the world-famous beer festival.
