French President Emmanuel Macron has urged European and NATO military leaders to draft a plan for credible security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire. His appeal comes amid shifting international dynamics, including renewed negotiations between Ukraine and Russia and a surprising policy shift from the United States.
High-Level Meeting in Paris
On March 11, Macron hosted a closed-door meeting in Paris, bringing together senior military officials from 34 allied nations, including EU and NATO members, as well as Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. Notably, the United States, NATO’s most influential member, did not send a representative, as reported by Digi24.
During the meeting, Macron emphasized the urgency of planning for long-term and credible security guarantees to ensure a sustainable peace in Ukraine. The Elysée Palace stressed that these guarantees should be accompanied by uninterrupted military support for Ukraine to maintain stability.
Ukraine-Russia Negotiations and U.S. Policy Shift
The Paris meeting took place as Ukraine approved a one-month ceasefire proposal from the United States and agreed to enter direct negotiations with Russia in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The U.S. stance marks a notable change in Washington’s approach to the conflict, prompting Macron to rally European allies for a coordinated response.
Macron has consistently advocated for Europe to take greater responsibility for its own security rather than relying solely on U.S. leadership. His latest call aligns with his broader push for European strategic autonomy in defense matters.
As negotiations between Ukraine and Russia progress, the development of robust security assurances will be crucial in shaping the region’s future stability.
