Earlier this month, a 40-year-old man set his neighbor’s car on fire after breaking into it and stealing two cans of tomato sauce.
The bizarre incident occurred on Thursday, November 14, in Valentigney, France, and was caught on a surveillance camera belonging to another neighbor.
The man initially broke into the car by smashing a window, taking two tins of tomato sauce from inside. He then inexplicably returned to the car and set it on fire.
When police searched the suspect's home, they found the stolen tomato sauce cans stored in his refrigerator.
According to AutoPlus, the man is well-known to law enforcement, with no fewer than nine prior offenses on his criminal record. He has been arrested and is currently in custody, facing charges of theft and arson.
The motive for the fire remains unclear, leaving investigators questioning the man’s mental state and the reasoning behind his erratic actions.
The car’s owner has suffered a considerable loss, as the vehicle was completely destroyed in the blaze.
Due to his extensive criminal history, the 40-year-old man faces the possibility of a severe sentence. However, why the theft of two cans of tomato sauce led to such extreme behavior continues to be a mystery.
