Sinkholes can form suddenly, often without warning, leading to serious safety risks. They are typically caused by natural erosion of underground rock or human activities such as construction and mining.

Evacuations and Safety Concerns

In Godstone, a sinkhole appeared late Monday night and continued growing on Tuesday, reaching an estimated 20 meters in size.

The collapse damaged a home’s garden and led to fears of further ground instability. Authorities ordered immediate evacuations as a precaution, with some residents describing the experience as terrifying.

"We were told to leave as fast as possible due to exposed cables and explosion risks," said local resident Robin Sherry. While some evacuees found hotel accommodations, others stayed with family or in their cars.

The water supply was also affected, as a damaged pipe required emergency repairs.

The local water company assured residents that engineers were working on the issue and advised drivers to take alternate routes.

According to 20minutos, authorities are monitoring the situation closely while planning repairs to stabilize the area.

Historical Context

Godstone’s geological history includes extensive underground quarries dating back to the 17th century. These tunnels, originally used for mining firestone—a heat-resistant sandstone—may contribute to the area’s susceptibility to ground collapses.

As recovery efforts continue, residents remain on edge, waiting for further updates on when they can safely return home.
