A massive wildfire that erupted on Sunday in northern Athens, Greece, has led to the evacuation of more than 50,000 people and has devastated over 24,700 acres of land.
Tragic Death and Several Injuries
According to 20minutes the fire, which has spread rapidly due to dry conditions and strong winds, has resulted in the tragic death of a 65-year-old woman and several injuries.
The charred remains of the woman were discovered on Anapausesos Street inside a commercial building in Patima Chalandri. Reports suggest that the woman, who worked at a flower shop in the area, was unable to escape the flames after the rest of the building's occupants had evacuated.
The wildfire has also injured five firefighters, one of whom sustained severe burns to his feet and hands while battling the blaze. Additionally, thirteen people were treated for mild respiratory issues due to smoke inhalation.
High Risk of Further Damage
Despite the recent weakening of winds, numerous active fire fronts remain in Varnavas, Marathon, Nea Makri, Ano Souli, and Penteli.
The situation continues to be dire, with authorities warning of a high risk of further damage.
Over 700 firefighters, supported by 200 fire trucks, 17 airplanes, and 15 water-dropping helicopters, are working tirelessly to contain the fire, which now spans a 25-mile front.
The scale of the disaster has prompted a coordinated response from the European Union, with several countries, including France, Italy, Serbia, the Czech Republic, Turkey, and Romania, sending ground and air support to Greece under the European Civil Protection Mechanism.
