Israel has conducted a major strike on the Mezzeh airbase in Damascus, a site historically used by the Assad regime for military logistics and storage.

The attack, described as unprecedented in scale, followed opposition forces' recent takeover of the airbase.

A video of the strike, released by Middle East analyst Urich via his Telegram channel, shows a series of secondary explosions, strongly suggesting the detonation of ammunition and weapons stored at the base.

Once a logistics hub for the Assad regime's Air Force, Mezzeh housed reinforced concrete shelters and served multiple purposes, including as a prison for regime opponents and as Bashar al-Assad's personal airport.

According to Militarnyi, satellite imagery over the years shows that the airbase primarily hosted helicopters even before the Syrian civil war. Following the recent fall of Assad’s regime, opposition forces took control of the base, raising concerns about weapon transfers to hostile entities.

Analysts believe Israel's move was twofold:

  1. Neutralizing Weapons: Destroying any remaining weapons and equipment to prevent their transfer to enemy groups.

  2. Weakening Future Offensives: Reducing the offensive potential of any post-Assad government forces that may emerge.

The strike highlights Israel’s strategy to minimize security threats in the region, especially as Syria transitions into uncertain political terrain following the end of Bashar al-Assad's 24-year rule.

The strike comes just days after Assad's regime officially collapsed. Reports suggest that Assad fled Syria and is currently in Moscow, as per Russian media.
