Argentine President Javier Milei has officially declined an invitation to become a member of BRICS in letters to Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
This was reported by the Argentine television channel TN.
"Buenos Aires' refusal is formalized in a letter signed by President Javier Milei.
It states that at this time, the country does not consider it appropriate to participate in the alliance as a member," reports the TN channel.
Another broadcaster, CanalC, adds that the head of state sent letters to the leaders of the countries in BRICS, including Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin.
Why Milei Decided to Reject Joining BRICS
Throughout the campaign, both Milei and Foreign Minister Diana Mondino had repeatedly assured that Argentina would withdraw from joining BRICS if they came to power in the Casa Rosada, in contrast to the stance of Sergio Massa, who did advocate for participation in this group with a marked geopolitical position.
However, once the results of the runoff election were known, the idea began to circulate within the international team of La Libertad Avanza that Argentina could participate, but with low intensity: "In the situation we are in, it's better to be in more places than fewer," said those who defended joining.
