North Korea has reportedly deployed thousands of troops to Russia to aid in its invasion of Ukraine, with more soldiers expected by year’s end.

700,000 Tons of Rice

This is reported by Digi24 siting South Korean intelligence and military officials.

In exchange, Russia has promised North Korea 700,000 tons of rice and access to space technology, as reported by Digi24.

While South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) notes that North Korea’s involvement may prove more costly than beneficial in the long term, some Seoul experts argue that Pyongyang sees this alliance as potentially advantageous.

The partnership could mean Russian support in any future conflict on the Korean Peninsula, an asset North Korea values greatly.

Provide Space Technology

South Korean sources report that North Korean soldiers deployed to Russia will be compensated with monthly salaries of approximately $2,000, potentially generating over $200 million annually for North Korea if 10,000 troops are sent.

In addition to troops, about 4,000 North Korean workers are currently stationed in Russia, earning around $800 per month.

Alongside monetary gains, North Korea aims to alleviate its food crisis. With a significant portion of the country’s 4 million-ton annual grain production failing to meet its needs, the 700,000-ton rice promise could fill a large gap.

Further, the agreement with Russia could provide Pyongyang with space technology for military satellite development.
