NATO Flexes Naval Strength in Romania During Sea Shield 25

War in Ukraine has shaken Europe’s sense of security. Russia’s continued aggression has pushed NATO allies to boost their cooperation and readiness, especially in eastern regions.

That’s why eyes are now on Romania. This spring, the country is hosting NATO’s biggest maritime military exercise of the year, reports Ziare.

The exercise is called Sea Shield 25. It takes place between March 31 and April 11, mostly in the Black Sea and the Port of Constanța.

It is organized by the Romanian Naval Forces. Over 2,300 troops are involved. They come from 12 countries, including Romania.

The other nations include the U.S., the U.K., France, Spain, Italy, Canada, Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria, Albania, and the Netherlands.

For two weeks, these troops are running through realistic combat scenarios. The training covers a wide range of conditions.

Soldiers are preparing for battles at sea, in rivers, under water, on land, and in the air. Romania has sent more than 1,600 troops and 80 units of equipment.

These include 28 ships, two helicopters, and a mobile missile launch team.

The Romanian Army is also taking part. Other forces are contributing 200 soldiers and over 40 pieces of equipment.

About 500 foreign troops are involved, along with 27 units of gear from their countries. In total, 150 military systems are being used.

These include 33 ships, 14 aircraft, 90 land vehicles, and nine fast boats.

The main goal of the drill is to improve how NATO and its partners work together. Soldiers and commanders are learning how to better communicate and act as a single force.

The training also helps security agencies coordinate more effectively.

Romania’s defense minister, Angel Tîlvăr, said the exercise shows the country’s firm support for NATO. He said it helps make the region safer and NATO stronger.

Sea Shield 25 has been planned since 2024 and reflects Romania’s long-term commitment to defending the eastern flank.
