The relationship between the Philippines and China has been shaped by both cooperation and conflict.

While economic ties between the two nations have grown over the years, longstanding territorial disputes in the South China Sea remain a major source of tension.

These contested waters, rich in resources and vital for international trade, have been the stage for escalating confrontations as both nations assert their claims.

Conducting Patrol Mission

On Monday, the Philippines accused a massive Chinese Coast Guard vessel, known as “The Monster,” of illegally operating within its exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

The 12,000-ton ship, CCG-5901, was spotted near Capones Island in Zambales province, northwest of Manila, according to Digi24.

According to Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela, the Chinese ship’s erratic movements indicated it was conducting a patrol mission, rather than peaceful passage.

The Philippine Coast Guard responded by deploying its vessel, BRP Cabra, to shadow the Chinese ship closely and assert the country’s sovereign rights.

“The crew of BRP Cabra remained steadfast in challenging this claim,” Tarriela said, emphasizing the importance of protecting Filipino fishermen and ensuring security in the region.

China’s increasing presence in the South China Sea has sparked concern among neighboring nations.

Last month, Beijing conducted large-scale military drills near Scarborough Shoal, another contested area.

The CCG-5901, equipped with anti-aircraft defense systems and capable of extended missions, frequently patrols waters with significant oil and gas reserves, some of which Vietnam has been exploring for years.

China’s state-run Global Times reported that the Coast Guard plans to expand its patrols, describing them as “fully justified.”

However, the Philippines, under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., has bolstered its partnership with the United States to counter China’s territorial ambitions.
