Pope Francis entered his 27th day in hospital on Wednesday, with the Vatican reporting a peaceful night and signs of continued recovery following his hospitalization last month for bilateral pneumonia.

A statement from the Holy See said the 88-year-old pontiff remains under pharmacological treatment at Rome's Gemelli Hospital, where he was admitted on February 14.

Doctors have lifted the prognosis — meaning he is no longer in immediate danger — but caution remains due to the “complexity” of his health condition.

“The improvements recorded in previous days have further consolidated,” the Vatican said Monday to ABC, pointing to positive blood tests, clinical signs, and a good response to medication.

While the Vatican has not detailed a specific timeline for discharge, officials confirmed the pope will remain in hospital for additional days to allow full recovery under medical supervision.

Though the Vatican says the pontiff is out of immediate risk, officials emphasize that the situation is still being taken seriously.

The phrase “significant infectious picture” used in Monday’s update underscores the lingering seriousness of the illness, even as his condition improves.

Sources close to the Vatican medical team told local media that the pope is resting more comfortably, engaging in light reading and prayer, and occasionally speaking with aides and family members.

Marking a Milestone While Hospitalized

This Thursday will mark a major milestone in Francis’ papacy — 12 years since his election on March 13, 2013, after Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation.

The anniversary will be a subdued one, given the pope’s health, but Vatican insiders say the milestone will be quietly recognized at the hospital.

Pope Francis, known for his public outreach and commitment to social justice, has faced a series of health issues in recent years, including surgery for a colon condition and recurring respiratory problems.
