The Vatican has released the first image of Pope Francis since his hospitalization a month ago for double pneumonia, offering a glimpse of the 88-year-old pontiff as he continues his recovery.

The photo, published on Sunday, shows Pope Francis from behind, seated in a chapel at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, where he has been receiving care since February 14.

According to Vatican officials, the Pope celebrated Mass with a group of priests and appeared to be breathing without oxygen support.

This was reported by Digi24.

"Weakened, But Not Alone"

In a message released on Sunday, Pope Francis described his condition as a “trial”, expressing solidarity with the sick and vulnerable around the world.

“I face a trial and I join so many brothers and sisters who are sick and fragile at this moment, as I am,” the Pope wrote in his Angelus message, shared from his hospital room.

“Our bodies are weakened, but even so, nothing can stop us from loving, praying, giving, being for each other, in faith, shining signs of hope.”

The Pope used his message to once again thank medical staff and caregivers, praising their quiet dedication:

“How much loving attention illuminates the rooms, corridors, clinics, places where the humblest services are provided.”

He extended his thanks to the faithful for their continued prayers and well-wishes, with special recognition for children who have been praying for his recovery.

Despite his own health challenges, Pope Francis called on the world to remain focused on global suffering:

“I invite you to pray for peace, especially in countries wounded by war: in martyred Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Burma, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.”

The Vatican confirmed Saturday that Pope Francis’ condition is gradually improving, though he must remain hospitalized for continued treatment. He has reportedly been receiving oxygen therapy, but the most recent photo suggests he is now breathing unaided.
