For years, Russia has held a strong foothold in Syria, supporting Bashar al-Assad’s regime through a brutal civil war. But recent events have shaken Moscow’s influence in the region.

A swift and unexpected offensive by Syrian rebel groups has toppled Assad’s government, leaving Russian forces isolated and scrambling to evacuate.

The loss of Syria as an ally strikes a critical blow to Russia. For Moscow, the country served as a key operational base, not only in the Middle East but also for its broader military ventures, including operations in Africa.

Now, with Assad’s regime gone, the Russian military is under pressure to retreat, according to WP.

Pelted With Rocks

Videos circulating online show the tense reality on the ground. Rebel fighters are seen pelting Russian vehicles with rocks as they retreat.

The remaining Russian forces are confined to the Khmeimim Airbase and the naval port in Tartus.

Reports suggest that Russian officials are negotiating with Syria’s new leadership, though these talks are unlikely to yield anything more than an agreement to leave peacefully.

In recent days, Russia has begun evacuating personnel and equipment.

Large military transport planes, including AN-124 and IL-76 aircraft, have been landing at Khmeimim to retrieve troops and assets.

Much of the high-value equipment, such as advanced air defense systems like the S-400 Triumf, is being prioritized. However, some vehicles and supplies may be left behind as the situation grows more precarious.

Russia’s presence in Syria was once a symbol of its regional dominance. Now, the withdrawal highlights its vulnerabilities.

Rebel forces have cut off key supply lines, leaving Russian troops with limited resources. Vehicles like Tigr armored cars and light transport trucks are among the few remaining assets available to the contingent.
