A routine training exercise in the French commune of Guichen, Ille-et-Vilaine, took an unexpected turn when a RAID police helicopter caused damage to a local sports complex.
Extreme Wind Speeds Causes Problems
Guichen, a town accustomed to hosting drills for the elite RAID unit, experienced significant disruption during a simulation exercise focused on hostage situations.
The RAID (Recherche, Assistance, Intervention, Dissuasion) helicopter, known for its powerful rotor wash, was conducting a landing maneuver when the incident occurred.
The helicopter’s rotor blades, which spin at speeds exceeding 1,600 revolutions per minute, created intense winds that sent debris and loose materials flying. This powerful force resulted in the cladding of the Jean-Pierre Loussouarn gymnasium being torn away.
Still in Working Condition
Local news outlet France Bleu and 20minutes reported that the damage was substantial but did not render the gymnasium unusable. The mayor of Guichen confirmed that the facility remains operational despite the incident.
“The gym is still in working condition,” the mayor stated. “We are awaiting expert evaluations to determine the extent of the damage and the cost of repairs.”
The cost of repairing the damage will be covered by the police’s insurance, as confirmed by local officials. Experts are expected to visit the site soon to assess the full impact of the damage and ensure that necessary repairs are made promptly.
This event underscores the significant effects that helicopter rotor wash can have, especially in close quarters. While RAID frequently conducts high-intensity training exercises in various locations, this incident highlights the potential for collateral damage during such operations.
