Civilian aircraft disasters often lead to long investigations and diplomatic fallout.

When a country’s own military is responsible, the consequences can be even more serious.

A Russian investigation has confirmed that Moscow was responsible for the downing of an Azerbaijan Airlines plane on December 25.

According to sources close to the inquiry, the aircraft was struck by a missile fired from a Russian Pantsir-S1 system.

The attack caused the plane to crash near Aktau, Kazakhstan, killing 38 people and injuring 29 others, according to Hotnews.

Wants compensations for victims

Investigators have now identified both the soldier who launched the missile and the officer who gave the order.

Despite these findings, Russian officials have not issued a public statement taking responsibility.

Azerbaijani authorities insist that Moscow must acknowledge the incident and compensate the victims.

Reports indicate that the aircraft was hit after electronic warfare systems disrupted its controls.

As it lost stability, pilots requested an emergency landing in Russia but were denied permission. Forced to continue toward Kazakhstan, the plane ultimately crashed before reaching a safe landing zone.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev addressed the situation days after the tragedy.

He stated that while there is no evidence the attack was intentional, it is clear that Russia must be held accountable.

Baku has issued three demands: an official apology, recognition of responsibility, and financial compensation for the victims and their families.

Tensions between the two nations have increased following the incident. Azerbaijani officials have warned that if Moscow refuses to cooperate, the case could be taken to an international court.
