Russian naval operations in Portuguese waters have intensified significantly in recent days, according to Admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo, commander of Portugal's navy.
Speaking from a naval base in Lisbon, the admiral confirmed the movement of nine Russian vessels, traveling both north and south along Portugal’s coastline.
The fleet consists of two frigates, a corvette, two fuel tankers, three research vessels, and an electronic surveillance ship, according to Portal O'Bronny.
Frigates are versatile warships designed for multi-role capabilities, often equipped with anti-air, anti-submarine, and surface-to-surface weaponry.
Russia’s Admiral Gorshkov-class frigates, for instance, can carry Kalibr cruise missiles and advanced air-defense systems, making them a significant strategic asset.
Monitoring Activities Closely
Corvettes, smaller but highly maneuverable, are used for coastal defense and escort missions. Russia’s Steregushchiy-class corvettes feature stealth technology and advanced radar systems.
Fuel tankers, vital for logistical support, enable extended operations by refueling warships at sea, increasing the fleet’s operational range.
The research vessels are typically involved in oceanographic studies or undersea surveillance. However, they can be repurposed for intelligence-gathering, especially in monitoring submarine cables or undersea infrastructure.
The electronic surveillance ship in the group specializes in intercepting communications and tracking signals, a critical component of modern naval intelligence.
Admiral Gouveia e Melo stated that the Portuguese military is closely monitoring these movements.
"We are maintaining control over their activities and applying constant pressure by positioning our vessels nearby," he said.
