A Russian military cargo ship, tasked with transporting military equipment and weapons from Syria, suffered a breakdown near the Portuguese coast, the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine (HUR) reported on Telegram on December 23.
The cargo ship, Sparta, experienced a critical malfunction in its main engine’s fuel pipe, leaving the vessel adrift in open waters.
The crew is reportedly attempting repairs to restore the ship's functionality.
Following troop withdrawals from remote regions in Syria, Russia's military presence has been reduced to two key locations: the Khmeimim Air Base and the Tartus Naval Base.
Reports indicate that some weaponry and equipment previously stationed at Tartus has been rerouted to Libya via sea transport.
Amid these developments, Russian personnel in Syria are reportedly discussing the possibility of a complete withdrawal.
According to HUR, Syria’s new leadership may demand that Russian forces vacate the Khmeimim and Tartus bases by Feb. 20, 2025.
In a related development, Ukraine’s intelligence and foreign affairs ministries successfully coordinated an evacuation from Syria, ensuring the safe return of 34 individuals, including 31 Ukrainian citizens and three Syrian nationals.
