The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the National Police have successfully uncovered and halted an attempt by Russian intelligence agencies to carry out a terrorist attack using a Ukrainian minor. The plot, which targeted the city of Ternopil, involved the blackmail and manipulation of a 14-year-old schoolgirl who was coerced into planting an explosive device near the local police department.
According to an official statement from the SBU, the Russian operatives not only aimed to use the girl for the bombing but also planned to kill her in the process, according to digi24.ro.
The Ukrainian authorities revealed that the girl's involvement began when Russian intelligence agents spotted her trying to earn money through Telegram channels. To force her compliance, the attackers hacked her phone, threatening to release intimate photos of the minor online unless she complied with their demands.
Under duress, the girl crafted an improvised explosive device (IED) and concealed it in a backpack, which she placed under a car parked near the Ternopil police station.
Russian operatives intended to remotely detonate the bomb, hoping to kill the girl along with as many people as possible in the vicinity of the blast.
Fortunately, SBU officers acted swiftly and located the device before it could detonate. The explosives were neutralized, and the minor was taken into custody. She is now under house arrest while facing serious charges, including attempted terrorism. If convicted, the girl could face up to 10 years in prison, along with confiscation of property.
The SBU has confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with authorities working to uncover the full extent of the criminal activities and ensure all those involved in the plot are held accountable.
This disturbing incident highlights the lengths to which Russian intelligence agencies are willing to go to recruit vulnerable individuals and manipulate them for acts of terrorism. Ukrainian officials are continuing to assess the situation, while providing support for the girl and working to prevent further exploitation of minors in such criminal schemes.
