A tragic act of violence unfolded in the Bosnian town of Sanski Most on Wednesday when an employee of a local school shot three of his colleagues before attempting to take his own life, police reported.
The victims include the school principal, a secretary, and a teacher, according to Euronews.
No children were present at the school at the time of the incident, as it is currently the school holidays in Bosnia.
The police were alerted in the morning after the man opened fire with an automatic rifle. According to a police spokesman, the perpetrator attempted suicide after shooting the three employees and was seriously injured.
The television station N1 TV quoted eyewitnesses who reported that the shooter had been in conflict with the school administration for some time. Disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against him. Witnesses indicated that the perpetrator specifically targeted the three employees on Wednesday.
Such incidents are relatively rare in Bosnia and the Balkans, although the region is still awash with privately owned weapons, a legacy of the bloody war in the former Yugoslavia during the early 1990s.
Sanski Most is located in northwestern Bosnia.
Investigations into the exact circumstances and motives behind the crime are ongoing.
