This week in Bucharest, a certain event has captured attention.
A man was arrested for stealing three amputated human legs from the infectious waste dump at Cantacuzino Hospital, according to Digi24.
The unusual theft has raised questions about hospital waste management and public safety.
The Bucharest police announced they had detained the suspect. He was taken for questioning at Police Station 6.
Criminal charges of aggravated theft have been filed under the supervision of the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Sector 2 Court.
The incident reportedly occurred on January 10. According to police reports, the man climbed the hospital’s fence, entered the courtyard, and accessed the area designated for infectious waste.
He stole three human legs, which had been amputated and packed in biological waste bags.
The suspect then left the hospital grounds and headed toward Dacia Boulevard. During his escape, he dropped one of the legs, which was discovered by a hospital medical professional.
The staff member immediately informed hospital management, which then alerted authorities.
Another leg was later found in the area. Police are continuing the search for the third missing leg.
The case has also led to scrutiny of Cantacuzino Hospital's waste management practices.
The Bucharest Municipality Public Health Directorate (DSPMB) fined the hospital 4,400 lei.
The fines were issued for failing to secure the temporary storage space for hazardous waste and for inadequate supervision of personnel managing this material.
This bizarre theft has raised concerns about the handling of biological waste in medical facilities.
Authorities are now investigating how the suspect accessed the storage area and managed to carry out the theft unnoticed.
Hospital management has yet to comment on the incident.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are working to recover the remaining leg and determine the suspect’s motives.
