Sweden has announced a new space strategy, designating the Esrange Space Center in Kiruna as a key base for NATO satellite launches.
This initiative was announced by Foreign Minister Tobias Billström during his visit to the United States, which included discussions with NASA officials. Billström indicated that the Swedish government plans to launch military satellites from the Esrange space base in northern Sweden.
As a new NATO member, Sweden sees space as a key sector for its contributions to the alliance.
One major aspect of Sweden's contribution is positioning Esrange as the primary alternative for launching military satellites for NATO countries in Europe, according to SVT Nyheter.
Currently, France is the only EU/NATO country offering this service.
