What would you do to get out of a bad date?

What is the best way to get out of a date when you suddenly get cold feet? The worst idea is probably calling the police with false accusations.

That was exactly what a young American woman did when she was supposed to go on a date with a man she met online. According to a police report, she "got cold feet" and didn't know how to tell him.

False Alarm

Eighteen-year-old Sumaya Thomas from Iowa had arranged a romantic date with a man she met through an online dating app.

When her date arrived at her doorstep on June 16, Thomas panicked and decided she didn’t want to go through with it.

Instead of canceling the date directly or making up an excuse, Thomas called 911 and concocted a story about the man at her door being her abusive ex-boyfriend, claiming she was seven months pregnant and asking the police to remove him from her property.

Thomas told the 911 operator that the man on her porch was threatening to “hit, punch, kick, and stab her,” prompting the dispatch of a police car to her location.

But when officers arrived, they found not an angry assailant, but a calm man leaving the property.

When questioned, the man explained that he and Thomas had met a week earlier through a dating app and were supposed to go on a date that night.

Investigation

According to an affidavit, “the conversation showed he was being honest and he really did just meet this female.”

Thomas insisted they had known each other for two years and that she was pregnant with his child. She claimed he had been abusive throughout their relationship and had shown up at her home threatening her.

Police discovered that Thomas had deleted texts with her date to cover her tracks.

After repeated questioning, she admitted to fabricating the entire story. She explained that she didn't think officers would help her if she told them she simply didn’t want to go on the date.

Charges

Sumaya Thomas was charged with two misdemeanor counts of False Report of Indictable Offense to Public Entity and one count of False Report – 911 call.

She was released from jail, while her innocent date was held for about an hour by police.
