Traveling to the United States used to be seen as a dream for many. Tourists from all over the world would visit for business, sightseeing, or family reunions.

But in recent years, entering the country has become an unpredictable and sometimes frightening experience.

Some travelers have been detained, handcuffed, and even deported over minor visa issues, reports Digi24.

Journalist Arwa Mahdawi argues that it may not be worth the risk. In a column for The Guardian, she points out that even visitors from Western countries—who are not usually targeted by strict immigration enforcement—have been subjected to harsh treatment.

She gives the example of Rebecca Burke, a 28-year-old artist from Wales. Burke was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for 19 days.

Her crime? She had the wrong visa. Instead of simply being sent home, she was held in poor conditions before being deported in chains.

Other travelers have faced similar treatment. A Canadian woman was detained for two weeks because of a visa application issue.

Two German tourists were locked up for nearly two weeks before being sent back home. These incidents have led some governments to issue warnings to their citizens.

Germany recently updated its travel advisory, reminding people that having a visa or an entry waiver does not guarantee entry into the U.S.

The UK Foreign Office has also warned that travelers must follow every requirement carefully, as U.S. authorities enforce immigration rules strictly.

Mahdawi questions why anyone would choose to visit a country that treats travelers this way. She acknowledges that not all Americans support these policies.

Many in the tourism industry rely on international visitors and do not agree with the harsh enforcement.

However, she argues that people have the power to make choices with their money. Spending it elsewhere could send a message.

The article also raises concerns that even those with legal residency are not safe. Mahdawi shares her own fears as a British-Palestinian with a U.S. green card.

She points to cases like Mahmoud Khalil, a permanent resident detained for his political views.

Even U.S. citizens have reason to worry, as Trump has suggested severe punishments for protesters.

For Mahdawi, visiting the U.S. is simply not worth the risk right now. She warns travelers to think carefully before planning a trip.
