A wave of intense seismic activity has put Greek authorities on high alert, prompting emergency measures across multiple islands in the Aegean Sea. With thousands of earthquakes recorded in recent weeks, concerns are growing about potential damage and further tremors.
Anafi Joins Santorini and Amorgos in Emergency Status
As reported by Digi24, the Greek island of Anafi has been placed under a state of emergency following a surge in seismic activity. This follows similar declarations for Santorini and Amorgos, marking the third island to take such measures.
The decision, announced by Civil Protection Secretary-General Vassilis Papageorgiou, will remain in effect until at least March 13. Authorities stated that the emergency status is necessary to address "extraordinary needs and manage the consequences of intense seismic activity."
Over 14,000 Earthquakes Recorded Since Late January
The region between Santorini and Amorgos has experienced a significant increase in seismic activity, with over 14,000 earthquakes detected since January 26.
On February 9 alone, more than 1,100 tremors were recorded, highlighting the scale of the ongoing geological unrest.
While most of the earthquakes have been minor, the frequency and persistence of the tremors have raised concerns among experts and local authorities.
The potential for stronger quakes remains a key worry, prompting precautionary measures across the affected islands.
Authorities Monitor the Situation Closely
Seismologists are closely monitoring the situation, though the exact cause of the recent uptick in activity remains unclear. The Aegean region is known for its complex tectonic movements, and past seismic events have caused significant destruction.
For now, residents and tourists on the affected islands are urged to remain vigilant as authorities continue to assess the risks and prepare for any further developments.
