A devastating skiing accident occurred this Saturday afternoon at Grand-Bornand in Haute-Savoie, claiming the life of an 8-year-old boy.
The boy was skiing on a blue slope with his father when he tragically deviated onto a black run.
"He fell and slid onto the black slope of Lachat," Benoit Defournel, the deputy prosecutor of the Republic of Annecy, told France 3.
The young skier, who was wearing a helmet, then slid for several hundred meters on the icy slope, which the rescue services referred to as having "tile snow" - a term used to describe particularly hard and slippery snow conditions.
Despite prompt medical attention, the boy was transferred to the CHU of Grenoble where he later succumbed to his injuries.
An investigation has been opened to determine the exact circumstances of this tragic incident.
