Governments around the world have been reviewing their stance on TikTok due to concerns over data security.

While the United States is moving forward with banning the app unless its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, divests ownership, the United Kingdom has no plans to follow suit.

A spokesperson for Downing Street confirmed that the British government will not introduce a ban on TikTok.

Instead, officials are maintaining communication with major social media companies to ensure they meet the country’s data protection and cybersecurity standards.

US Ban Sparks Concerns

The looming ban in the United States has raised concerns among TikTok users in the UK, especially those who regularly interact with American content creators, according to El Economista.

The platform has become a major space for social interaction, business promotion, and entertainment, making any restrictions a significant issue for millions of users.

On Thursday, TikTok stated that it would suspend operations in the US on January 19 unless the government provided legal assurances that the company could continue operating.

The following day, the US Supreme Court upheld a law requiring TikTok to shut down unless it separates from ByteDance.

Uncertainty Over TikTok’s Future

Responsibility for enforcing the ban currently lies with President Joe Biden, but the White House has chosen to defer the decision to Donald Trump, who will take office on January 20.

This delay adds uncertainty to TikTok’s future in the US.

Despite the American government's concerns over national security, the UK sees no immediate need for similar action.

British officials continue to focus on regulatory oversight rather than outright prohibition.

For now, TikTok users in the UK can continue using the app without restrictions.
