Ukraine has arrested its chief military psychiatrist, Oleh Druz, on allegations of illegal enrichment, with authorities claiming he amassed over $1 million in assets since the Russian invasion began in February 2022.
According to Hotnews.ro, Druz was part of a commission responsible for determining military service eligibility.
Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) reported that Druz owns multiple high-value properties, including three apartments in Kyiv, one in Odesa, and two plots of land, as well as several luxury BMW vehicles. Investigators also found significant sums of cash during a search of his residence—$152,000 and €34,000 in undeclared funds.
Authorities claim that these assets were registered under the names of Druz’s wife, children, and other associates to avoid detection.
If convicted, he faces up to ten years in prison on charges of illegal enrichment and false declarations.
History of Allegations
This is not the first time Druz has faced scrutiny. In 2017, he was suspended for failing to declare assets, including SUVs and several properties.
His recent arrest comes amid Ukraine’s broader anti-corruption efforts, which have intensified in response to international pressure and wartime challenges.
Ongoing Anti-Corruption Efforts
Corruption has been a longstanding issue in Ukraine, with authorities striving to curb fraudulent activities within key institutions.
In May, a Ukrainian lawmaker was accused of embezzling £220,000, while in 2023, over 30 officials faced bribery charges as part of an anti-corruption crackdown.
Last year, the Ukrainian parliament voted to dissolve military medical commissions following reports of officials accepting bribes in exchange for exemption from military service.
This latest arrest underscores the continued efforts to reform Ukraine's military and governmental institutions as the war with Russia rages on.
