A controversy has erupted at the Paris Olympics involving Ukrainian athlete Anastasia Rybachok, who was prohibited from competing with a boat displaying the phrase "I am Ukrainian."
According to Sport24 the incident has sparked outrage among Ukrainians and highlights the ongoing struggles faced by Ukrainian athletes on the international stage.
Coach's Frustration
Igor Naev, the head coach of Ukraine’s rowing team, expressed his frustration over the decision. "Anastasia ordered a boat with 'I am Ukrainian' written on it. The organizers claimed it was political advertising.
This is absurd, but rules are rules," Naev stated. He explained that similar restrictions have been imposed on other slogans, including "Glory to Ukraine - Glory to the Heroes," which has also been deemed political and ordered to be covered up at international competitions.
The coach noted that while such restrictions are particularly stringent this year, they reflect a broader trend of regulating athlete expressions at international events.
"Last year, it was more relaxed, and in 2022, athletes could display slogans against war and violence during medal ceremonies," he added. This shift in enforcement has perplexed and irritated the Ukrainian team, who view these expressions as normal and integral to their identity.
Partner Company's Statement
The partner company supporting Rybachok also issued a statement condemning the situation.
"As the official partner of canoeist Anastasia Rybachok and as supporters from Ukraine, our company is outraged by the events at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The International Canoe Federation saw the phrase 'I am Ukrainian' on Anastasia’s boat as propaganda and forced part of it to be painted over," the statement read.
The company emphasized the symbolic importance of the boat’s design for Rybachok and her team. Anastasia herself designed the canoe's imagery, embedding a powerful message of Ukrainian identity and resilience.
"This design was crucial for the entire team and was a significant part of Anastasia’s self-identity and the indomitable spirit of Ukraine," the company stated.
