Unidentified drones have been spotted over three Royal Air Force (RAF) bases in the UK, according to the United States Air Force (USAF).
The sightings occurred between November 20 and 22 at RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, and RAF Feltwell in Norfolk.
These bases host significant USAF operations, making the incidents a potential security concern, according to Digi24.
The USAF described the drones as "small unmanned aerial systems" (UAS) and noted that their number, size, and configuration varied.
Take Threats Seriously
A spokesperson for the USAF in Europe confirmed that the incursions were closely monitored. Base officials assessed that the incidents did not harm residents or critical infrastructure.
Despite this, the activity has raised questions about the safety of sensitive military sites.
While the USAF has not disclosed whether countermeasures were deployed, it emphasized its right to protect its facilities.
"We continue to monitor our airspace and work with host nation authorities and mission partners to ensure the safety of personnel, facilities, and assets," the spokesperson said.
The British Ministry of Defence (MoD) also addressed the issue, stating:
"We take threats seriously and maintain robust defensive measures at our sites, including counter-drone security capabilities."
The MoD did not comment further on specific procedures, citing operational security.
At this stage, the USAF has not categorized the drones as hostile.
However, the incidents underline a growing challenge faced by militaries worldwide as unauthorized drone activity near sensitive sites increases.
Advances in drone technology have made it easier for such devices to evade detection and approach critical locations, prompting heightened counter-drone efforts globally.
RAF Lakenheath, home to the USAF’s F-35 fighter jets, and RAF Mildenhall, which supports aerial refueling missions, are crucial strategic bases.
RAF Feltwell, primarily a communications hub, also plays an essential role in military operations. The proximity of these drone sightings to such critical assets underscores the seriousness of the investigation.
While the incursions did not result in damage or injury, they show the need for continued vigilance.
Authorities are actively monitoring the situation in collaboration with local and international partners to ensure the security of these key installations.
