A fierce wildfire, fueled by strong winds, has ravaged approximately 35 hectares of vegetation in Sigean as of Tuesday afternoon, prompting a massive response from emergency services.

Spread Rapidly

By 4:30 PM local time on June 2, firefighters, supported by two water-carrying helicopters and three Canadair aircraft, were battling the blaze that had rapidly spread over 40 hectares within just two hours according to lindependant.

The swift action of aerial resources has managed to partially contain the fire, although authorities report it is not yet fully extinguished. Approximately 100 hectares are now under threat from the inferno, with emergency crews from neighboring Pyrénées-Orientales deploying four additional trucks to bolster efforts in Aude.

Nearby wildlife reserve, remains unaffected,

In response to the escalating situation, local authorities have closed the RD6009 to traffic, and one lane has been restricted on the A9 highway from Perpignan to Narbonne.

Residents have been advised to steer clear of the area, with firefighters focusing on protecting potentially vulnerable properties. Thankfully, no residential areas are currently at immediate risk.

The Reserve Africaine, a nearby wildlife reserve, remains unaffected, though visitor access has been halted as a precautionary measure. The town of Sigean activated its local emergency response plan promptly upon alert and mobilized local civil security teams. By 4:45 PM, these measures were lifted as the immediate threat to Hameau du Lac subsided.
