Dogs are man's best friend, but not everyone understands the appeal of these furry, four-legged companions.
Never Understood the Love
That is the case for Stephanie Garcia from Rio Grande Valley, Texas, never understood the appeal of dogs. In fact, she openly admitted':
"I’ve never understood the love people have for dogs. It never made sense to me."
But her perspective completely changed last month when she made an unexpected discovery underneath her house.
To her surprise, a mother Golden Retriever, later named Honey, had taken refuge under her home with her litter of puppies. The abandoned dog had found shelter in the most unlikely of places.
As the puppies crawled around their mother, Garcia was caught off guard by the emotion she felt.
"The day Honey and her puppies came into my life, I instantly fell in love. I was overwhelmed with emotions," Garcia shared in an interview with Newsweek, according to Tag24.
An All-Consuming Rescue Mission
Despite her initial indifference toward dogs, Garcia and her daughter took the family of Golden Retrievers into their home.
Unfortunately, out of the eleven puppies, only four survived. Determined to care for the animals, Garcia took Honey and the pups to a veterinarian, who discovered that Honey was suffering from heartworms.
The rescue mission quickly became an all-consuming effort. Garcia spent large sums on veterinary bills and even lost her job due to the time she dedicated to caring for the dogs. Yet, she has no regrets.
"I don’t regret losing my job because these dogs have brought so much joy into our home," she said.
However, Garcia now worries about the future. "I’m afraid I won’t be able to keep them all because I can’t afford the vet bills. Dogs are expensive!" she admitted.
