Andre Braugher, star of 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' and 'Homicide: Life on the Street,' dies at 61.
Andre Braugher, the Emmy-winning actor best known for his roles in the TV series 'Homicide: Life on the Street' and 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine,' died on Monday at the age of 61 after a short illness.
His publicist confirmed the news to Variety on Wednesday. He is survived by his wife, Ami Brabson, and three children.
Braugher was a two-time Emmy winner, and to younger TV viewers, he was best known for his role as the blunt but lovable police captain Raymond Holt in the comedy series 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine.'
His scenes with actor Andy Samberg's detective Jake Peralta made Braugher a fan favorite.
'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' ran from 2013 to 2021 and was awarded a Golden Globe for Best Comedy Series in 2014.
Braugher won his Emmys for his roles as detective Frank Pembleton in 'Homicide: Life on the Street' and Nick Atwater in the TV series 'Thief' from 2006.
In an interview with Variety in 2020, Braugher spoke about the complexities of playing a police officer as a Black American man.
“Police officers who break the law to ‘uphold the law’ are a slippery slope,” he said. “It’s led to widespread, sanctioned and excused lawlessness all over. It’s something we all need to address together – all crime dramas.”
Braugher was born in 1962 in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Stanford University and later studied at the Juilliard School in New York City.
His first TV role was in 1989 as a Union soldier during the American Civil War in the TV series 'Glory,' where he played a free Black man who fought for the first Black regiment.
He was also nominated for two Emmys for his role in the TV series 'Men of a Certain Age' from 2009.
Braugher's death is a loss to the acting community and to fans of his work. He was a talented actor who brought depth and complexity to every role he played.
