The front line near Kupiansk, in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, has moved to within just two kilometers of the city, according to Andrii Besedin, Head of the Kupiansk City Military Administration.
Besedin described the situation as extremely difficult, with relentless assaults by Russian forces.
On January 8, Russian troops launched over 12 assault attempts in the Petropavlivka-Holubivka area, a central part of the Kupiansk front.
“The enemy is attempting to advance toward the main Svatove-Kupiansk highway to gain access to the city itself,” Besedin said during a national telethon on UNN.
Besedin added, “the situation is also very challenging in the Zahrizove-Lozova-Kruhliakivka direction, where the enemy continues persistent assaults to reach the left bank of the Oskil River.”
In addition to the fighting near Kupiansk, reports from January 7 indicate that Russian forces breached Ukrainian defenses in the Lyman direction in the Donetsk region.
