German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has announced that Germany is prepared to send military forces to Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping mission if a ceasefire with Russia is achieved.
Speaking at a NATO meeting in Brussels, Baerbock stated that Germany is committed to support initiatives for lasting peace.
Baerbock clarified that any deployment of German soldiers would be contingent on the establishment of a genuine ceasefire.
“German soldiers could be deployed only under the condition of a real ceasefire,” she stated, as reported by the Berliner-Zeitung on December 4.
Her remarks align with recent proposals by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, who suggested European nations might contribute to a peacekeeping force in Ukraine to stabilize the region.
NATO Foreign Ministers are currently meeting in Brussels (Dec. 3-4, 2024) to discuss continued support for Ukraine and regional security. The agenda features a NATO-Ukraine Council meeting, keeping the spotlight on Ukraine as the war with Russia continues.
This development comes as some Western countries, according to Le Monde, have reportedly revisited discussions about sending troops or private military contractors to Ukraine to bolster security.
Germany has been a key contributor to Ukraine’s military aid and has consistently pushed for diplomatic solutions.
