French President Emmanuel Macron has suggested that a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia could be reached “in the coming weeks”, following discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington.
According to Fox News, Macron outlined that the proposed truce would cover air, sea, and infrastructure targets, serving as a test of Russia’s sincerity in peace negotiations.
"A ceasefire in the air, at sea, and concerning infrastructure. If it is not respected, it will be the clearest proof that Russia is not serious about its commitments," Macron said.
He also indicated that this temporary pause in fighting could provide a window for discussions on security guarantees, occupied territories, and Ukraine’s reconstruction.
While praising Trump’s peace initiative, Macron warned that negotiations must result in meaningful security measures for Ukraine.
"We want peace. And I think President Trump's initiative is very positive. But my message was: be careful, because we need something substantial for Ukraine," he stated.
Macron acknowledged that Trump’s return to power could lead to a different approach to resolving the war. However, he stressed that the U.S. and France must ensure long-term security guarantees for Ukraine to prevent further Russian aggression.
France and UK Propose Security Plan for Ukraine
Macron also revealed that France and the United Kingdom have developed a security plan for Ukraine, which may include deploying European troops on Ukrainian soil.
While he clarified that these forces would not be stationed on the front lines, their presence would serve as a deterrent against further escalation.
This comes as Ukraine and its allies remain cautious about any ceasefire deal, citing Russia’s repeated violations of previous agreements, including the 2014 and 2015 Minsk Accords.
