Yehor Checherinda, an officer in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, has expressed strong support for continued attacks on Russian oil refineries, describing them as essential for crippling Russia's export capabilities and inflating domestic prices.
He shared these views during an interview for the Ukrinform project "Leshchenko Asks."
Checherinda cited a report by the American news outlet Politico, which outlined Ukraine's strategy of targeting Russian oil refining and production facilities.
The report suggests that this approach has been effective, a viewpoint supported by Philip Ingram, a former British military intelligence officer at NATO.
Ingram characterized it as a "mosquito bite" strategy; elusive, persistent, and exhausting for the adversary.
"The actions of the Security Service of Ukraine, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications have successfully destroyed oil refineries, leading to a significant price hike at Russian gas stations by 10% just last week," Checherinda explained.
Discussing the broader implications of Ukraine's military strategy, Checherinda shared his vision for the second half of 2024. He reflected on the evolving nature of warfare and expressed optimism about international support.
"Nothing happens for the first time in history. A new era, a new war, a new millennium. Old wars are a thing of the past," he stated.
He also cited assurances from French President Emmanuel Macron that France would intervene with troops should Russia achieve a breakthrough on the front lines, but only at Ukraine's request.
According to Checherinda, this strategy not only exerts economic pressure on Russia but also reduces military pressure along the frontline, enhancing the overall effectiveness of Ukraine's defensive and offensive operations.
