At least 15 people were killed and more than 30 injured after a car drove into a crowd in a tourist area of New Orleans, Louisiana, according to media reports citing authorities.
Initially, reports indicated 10 fatalities, but the death toll has since risen.
The incident occurred during New Year celebrations on Wednesday when a pickup truck plowed into a crowd. Following the collision, the driver exited the vehicle and opened fire on bystanders. Police responded with gunfire, killing the attacker on the scene.
According to Interfax, authorities identified the attacker as 42-year-old Shamsuddin Jabbar, a former American soldier from Texas.
Further investigations into the motive and circumstances are underway.
