Moldova and the United Kingdom have signed a security and defense partnership agreement during a visit by the UK and Romanian foreign ministers to Chișinău, the British government announced in a press release on November 20.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized the strain Moldova has faced since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, including a large influx of Ukrainian refugees.
“Living next to Ukraine, Moldovans experience the daily effects of Russian aggression, imperialism, and pressure,” Lammy stated.
The agreement is designed to strengthen cooperation between the two nations and increase Moldova’s resilience against external threats.
The UK government stated that the partnership will support Moldova’s sovereignty and security while also contributing to Ukraine’s stability amidst ongoing Russian aggression.
The UK also committed $2.5 million (£2 million) to improve Moldova’s cybersecurity and $6.3 million (£5 million) to enhance its healthcare system, including support for refugees.
This follows Moldova’s recent decision to pursue EU membership, which was enshrined in its Constitution after a referendum on October 20, where 50.35% of voters supported European integration.
