Following high-level talks with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer delivered a strong message of commitment to Ukraine’s defense, stating that the UK is prepared to deploy troops and aircraft if necessary to secure a lasting peace.
“I’m clear that the UK is ready to put boots on the ground and planes in the air to support a deal, working together with our allies, because that is the only way that peace will last,” Starmer declared, as reported by the BBC.
UK Steps Up Military Support
Starmer emphasized that Britain’s role extends beyond diplomacy—military backing must reinforce any peace deal to prevent future aggression from Russia.
“We have to win the peace,” he stated, referencing Britain’s post-WWII approach to security.
“The stakes, they couldn’t be higher,” he warned. “And we’re determined to work together to deliver a good deal. We discussed a plan today to reach a peace that is tough and fair, that Ukraine will help shape—one backed by strength to stop Putin from coming back for more.”
The Prime Minister also confirmed that 2025 will see Britain’s largest military aid package to Ukraine yet, as part of the UK’s biggest sustained defense spending increase since the Cold War.
Europe Must “Step Up”
Despite political differences, Starmer and Trump found common ground on European defense responsibilities.
Starmer agreed that Europe must shoulder a greater burden within NATO, aligning with Trump’s long-standing demand for increased European military spending.
“Mister President, you’re right—Europe must step up. And let me tell you now, I see the growing threats we face, and so the UK is all in,” Starmer declared.
“We Win, and We Get Things Done”
The two leaders also reaffirmed their economic and strategic partnership, celebrating the $1.5 trillion in investments and 2.5 million jobs created between their countries.
Starmer acknowledged their ideological differences but emphasized their shared drive for results.
“It’s no secret we’re from different political traditions, but there’s a lot we have in common. We believe it’s not taking part that counts—what counts is winning. If you don’t win, you don’t deliver.”
Starmer revealed that Britain is actively coordinating with France, NATO, and 18 other nations to solidify Europe’s role in securing Ukraine’s future. He emphasized that the UK will play its full part in ensuring any peace deal is not just signed, but enforced.
“I’ve made it clear that if there’s a deal, and we hope there is a deal in Ukraine, it has to stick. And we’re working with our European allies—France, NATO in particular—to ensure that.”
