Mass displacement has long been a consequence of war, reshaping borders and populations across history.
Now, a controversial proposal by Donald Trump has sparked international backlash, raising new concerns about the future of Gaza.
As reported by HotNews.ro, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz strongly rejected Trump’s suggestion to relocate over a million Palestinians from Gaza to neighboring Egypt and Jordan.
Speaking at a campaign event in Berlin, Scholz stated that "any plans for relocation, the idea that these citizens of Gaza will be expelled to Egypt or Jordan, are unacceptable."
A Divisive Proposal
Trump revealed that he had discussed the potential resettlement of Palestinians with Jordan’s King Abdullah II, claiming it could offer a path to stability.
However, Jordan and Egypt have firmly opposed the idea, with Jordan already hosting over two million registered Palestinian refugees.
Scholz reaffirmed Germany’s support for a two-state solution, emphasizing that Gaza’s governance should ultimately fall under the Palestinian Authority.
He warned that any forced relocation would undermine fragile hopes for peace, especially in light of recent ceasefire agreements.
International Reactions and Uncertain Future
Trump, known for his background in real estate, suggested that new housing developments in other Arab nations could serve as a temporary or long-term solution for displaced Gazans.
However, his remarks—describing Gaza as "effectively a demolition zone"—have drawn criticism, with many questioning the feasibility and ethics of such a plan.
Germany remains one of Israel’s key defense partners, significantly increasing arms exports to the country since the conflict with Hamas began in 2023.
As global powers debate the next steps for Gaza, Scholz’s firm opposition signals that Trump’s relocation proposal is unlikely to gain widespread support.
