Houthi rebels in Yemen have recently claimed responsibility for shooting down an American MQ-9 Reaper drone, highlighting ongoing tensions in the region.

The United States intensify its intelligence operation

The drone, valued at over $30 million, was reportedly downed in the northern Yemeni province of Saada, according to Tech.

The Houthi group, which receives support from Iran, has been active in attacking both military and civilian vessels in the Red Sea since December 2023. Their actions are part of a broader support for Hamas, which is engaged in conflict with Israel in the Gaza Strip.

This increased activity in the Middle East has also seen the United States intensify its intelligence operations to assist Israel, though this has occasionally resulted in losses of advanced military equipment.

The Pentagon has acknowledged the incident

The MQ-9 Reaper, developed by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, is a sophisticated unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) used for reconnaissance and strike missions.

The Reaper can carry a range of armaments and reconnaissance equipment, including Hellfire II missiles and Paveway II guided bombs. It has a wingspan of nearly 20 meters and a length of over 11 meters.

The drone can operate at altitudes of up to 15,000 meters and has a maximum speed of approximately 440 kilometers per hour. It boasts a flight endurance of up to 27 hours.

The Pentagon has acknowledged the incident but has yet to provide further details as it continues to investigate the claims. This incident underscores the ongoing volatility in the region and the risks faced by advanced military technology in conflict zones.
