War often brings destruction beyond the battlefield, impacting civilians and critical infrastructure. In Ukraine, repeated airstrikes on cities have caused widespread blackouts and heating shortages, intensifying the hardship for residents.

The latest attack on Odesa is yet another example of these ongoing assaults.

Widespread Damage and Power Outages

According to Digi24, Russian drones struck a densely populated residential area of Odesa early Wednesday morning, leaving over 500 homes without electricity or heating.

Mayor Ghenadi Truhanov confirmed that the attack also damaged 14 schools, 13 kindergartens, and a children’s hospital. At least one person was injured and is currently hospitalized.

Truhanov described the strike as a “massive attack” targeting civilian areas but did not provide details on the specific type of drones used.

Escalating Strikes Amidst Diplomatic Tensions

For the past three years, Russia has systematically targeted Ukraine’s energy and civilian infrastructure, launching drone and missile strikes on cities and villages across the country.

This latest assault comes just a day after U.S. and Russian officials held their first high-level talks in Saudi Arabia, where they agreed to appoint negotiators for the conflict—an initiative Ukraine has strongly criticized for proceeding without its involvement.

As winter continues, attacks on Ukraine’s power grid remain a major concern, raising fears of further disruptions to essential services for civilians already struggling with wartime conditions.
