Public narratives surrounding war and diplomacy often shift depending on political perspectives. As discussions on Ukraine’s future intensify, U.S. President Donald Trump has made statements that challenge widely accepted historical accounts of the conflict.

A Controversial Reinterpretation of the War

According to 20minutos, Trump suggested that Ukraine was responsible for the war, stating that Kyiv "should never have started it."

The remark contradicts established facts, as the war began when Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

The U.S. president also expressed support for European-led peacekeeping forces in Ukraine, saying he would not oppose military deployments from France or the United Kingdom as part of a peace deal. However, he ruled out any U.S. troop involvement, stating, "We are too far away."

Elections and Leadership Criticism

Trump also weighed in on Ukraine’s political situation, calling for elections in the country and claiming that President Volodymyr Zelensky’s approval rating is just four percent—a figure that contradicts independent polls, which place his support at around 50 percent.

He further suggested that Kyiv’s leadership had prolonged the war and that a settlement could have been reached earlier.

The remarks come amid ongoing U.S.-Russia negotiations in Saudi Arabia, which Trump claims have given him more confidence in a potential peace agreement.

His comments, however, have drawn criticism for undermining Ukraine’s position and misrepresenting the origins of the conflict.
