In a notable departure from the Biden administration’s unwavering support for Ukraine, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has expressed skepticism about continuing military aid to the embattled nation.
Youngest Speaker
In an interview with Punchbowl News, Johnson revealed that he has "lost the appetite" for ongoing assistance to Kyiv in light of the Russian invasion, marking a significant shift in rhetoric within the Republican Party.
Johnson, the youngest speaker elected to the position in October 2023, believes the conflict in Ukraine has become a prolonged stalemate.
"Everyone in the world is tired of this never-ending war," he stated, ac cording to L'independent.
His comments reflect a growing sentiment among some lawmakers who question the effectiveness of continued financial and military support for Ukraine.
Believes in Trump
The speaker hopes that new funding for Ukraine will not be necessary.
This sentiment places him at odds with a long-standing policy that has seen substantial aid flow into the country from the United States, especially under the Biden administration, which has been committed to supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression.
Johnson is looking toward the possibility of Donald Trump returning to the White House as a solution to end the conflict.
"If President Trump wins, I truly believe he can bring this conflict to a close. I think he would call Putin and tell him enough is enough," Johnson remarked.
In contrast, he views a potential Democratic victory as a "desperate and dangerous scenario" that could lead to an indefinite continuation of the war.
Johnson’s stance on Ukraine is not unique within the Republican Party. Under his leadership, House Republicans have repeatedly blocked legislation aimed at providing assistance to Ukraine, leaving Kyiv without crucial support for extended periods.
