Long-term security in Ukraine remains a pressing issue as European leaders weigh their role in post-war stabilization.

With the U.S. engaging in preliminary ceasefire discussions with Russia, European Council President Antonio Costa has called on the EU to prepare concrete security guarantees for Ukraine.

Strengthening Europe’s Defense Strategy

According to Digi24, Costa issued his appeal in an invitation letter to EU heads of state ahead of a March 6 summit. The extraordinary meeting will focus on bolstering European defense and maintaining support for Ukraine.

Costa emphasized that the EU must be ready to take greater responsibility for European security and contribute to the guarantees necessary for a lasting peace.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been invited to join the discussions, where leaders will evaluate recent developments and future commitments.

Divisions Over Troop Deployment

While EU nations broadly agree on supporting Ukraine, divisions remain over the possibility of deploying European troops post-conflict.

During a recent Paris meeting, France and the UK expressed willingness to explore the option, while Germany, Spain, and Poland remained cautious or outright opposed.

Additionally, the European Commission has proposed increasing defense spending, easing fiscal rules to allow higher military budgets, and expanding the European Investment Bank’s role in security funding.

As negotiations between Washington and Moscow continue, the EU faces mounting pressure to clarify its stance on Ukraine’s long-term security, ensuring that Europe is not sidelined in shaping the region’s future.
